Die Andere Late Night is a satirical sketch show by Omroep ZWART and BNNVARA, featuring a new generation of comedians who bring a sharp and energetic take on current events and society. With rotating guest hosts, a live audience and fast-paced sketches, the show brings a fresh and contemporary voice to Dutch late-night television.
During my time as a temporary member of the BNNVARA design team, I contributed to the development of the show’s visual identity. Working alongside a team of designers, motion designers and creatives, I was involved in the logo, motion graphics and elements of the set design.
It was especially rewarding to see the visual identity evolve from early ideas into something that ultimately came to life in the studio and on television.
For the pilot episode, a few graphics had already been created. However, these were not yet part of a fully developed visual identity.
We took these existing elements as a starting point, reworking and expanding them into a more cohesive and recognizable brand. Rather than simply creating additional broadcast graphics, we focused on building a visual system that could work consistently across the entire show.
This resulted in the DALN Design Toolkit: a flexible set of visual guidelines and assets designed for use across broadcast, motion, studio design, marketing and social media.
For the set, I created an abstract interpretation of the Dutch landscape. Rather than relying on the familiar image of canal houses and traditional architecture, the skyline combines a wider range of elements found throughout the Netherlands, from apartment blocks and traffic signs to a mosque and different types of housing.
The aim was to create a more contemporary and representative image of the country: recognizable as Dutch, without reducing it to the usual visual clichés. The illustrations became part of the set and helped extend the visual identity into the physical studio space.
